Walks from Caramel Cottage: Coast & Wolds

Caramel Cottage sits where the Yorkshire coast meets the Wolds, so there is a walk from the door for every pace: gentle meadow strolls, wide beach walks, and proper cliff-top coast paths on the Cleveland Way and the Yorkshire Wolds Way. Here are the best, from short to long.

Gentle walks from the door

• The Meadows. Right behind The Bay, a flat, off-the-road amble that is perfect for a morning or evening leg-stretch, dog or no dog.
• Hunmanby Gap beach. A short walk down from the cottage brings you to a wide, dog-friendly sandy beach. At low tide you can walk the sands roughly three miles round to Filey; check the tide times before you go.

Filey Brigg and the coast path

Filey Brigg is a dramatic rocky headland and the eastern end of both the Cleveland Way (which runs about 109 miles from Helmsley) and the Yorkshire Wolds Way. Walk out through Glen Gardens and along the cliff top for big North Sea views and excellent seabird watching. Keep dogs on the lead near the edge.

Longer coast walks

• Filey to Cayton Bay (about 6 to 7 miles one way). A fine cliff-top stretch of the Cleveland Way heading north towards Scarborough. Return by bus or train.
• Bempton Cliffs to Flamborough Head (about 11.5 miles, a short drive south to start). Voted one of Britain’s favourite walks, along the chalk cliffs above England’s biggest mainland seabird colony. Puffins from around April to July.

Into the Wolds

For a change from the coast, the Yorkshire Wolds Way heads inland from Filey Brigg through quiet, rolling farmland. A circular walk linking Hunmanby and Muston (about 7.8 miles) is a lovely half-day through classic Wolds scenery. Bring a map: OS Explorer 301 covers all of these.
