Stay on The Bay: the leisure centre

The easiest wet-weather answer is on your doorstep. Your stay includes free access to the resort leisure centre, with an indoor pool, sauna and gym. Swim in the morning, and you have not even had to find the car keys.

For families with children

  • SEA LIFE Scarborough (about 20 minutes). Underwater tunnels, rock pools and a play area, a reliable half-day out of the rain.
  • Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park. Birds, meerkats, alpacas and more, close to home.
  • Scarborough and Bridlington have indoor amusements, soft play and the Scarborough Fair Collection vintage museum for a change of pace. The Fair Collection opens Wednesday to Saturday only, from 1 April to the end of October, and is closed on bank holidays, so it is no help on a winter break or a Sunday to Tuesday stay.

For a proper day out

  • Whitby (about 45 minutes). The abbey, the museums, the jet shops and some of the best fish and chips in the country, all good in the wet.
  • York (about an hour). The Minster, the galleries and the museums make an easy indoor city day.
  • Sewerby Hall (about 25 minutes). The Georgian house and art gallery are lovely to explore under cover, though the house season runs from late March to the end of September only.
  • Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery at Hunmanby (a few minutes away). Tours of the working distillery where Filey Bay whisky is made, with a bar and kitchen if you just want to sit out the rain.
