Is the Yorkshire coast worth it in November?

November is the quietest month on this coast and, if you have a dog, the best value week of the year. The whole of Filey Bay is open to dogs from 1 October, the beaches are empty, and a cottage costs a fraction of what it does in August. The weather is the trade-off, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

In short: Nine out of ten of our November bookings bring a dog, against 38% across the year as a whole. The summer beach restriction has lifted, five miles of sand is open, and nobody else is on it. Bring a coat and plan around the light, which goes by half four.

Is the Yorkshire coast worth visiting in November?

For a certain kind of trip, yes, and the booking data says so more clearly than any brochure. Across a full year, 38% of our guests bring a dog. In November it is 90%. That is not a marketing line, it is what the statements show.

What they are coming for is space. Filey Bay is five miles of sand and in November you will share it with a handful of people and their dogs. In August you will not.

What is actually open in November?

Less than in July, and it is worth planning for. The seasonal beach kiosks wind down, some attractions go to weekend-only hours, and the small cafes keep shorter days.

What stays open: the pubs, the year-round cafes, Filey town, Scarborough and Bridlington, and the indoor attractions. On The Bay itself the leisure centre, pool, sauna and steam room run through the winter and are included in the stay, which matters more in November than it does in June.

How bad is the weather, honestly?

Changeable, windy, and colder than inland. This is the North Sea in late autumn and the wind comes off it without much in the way of shelter.

But it is a coast that rewards bad weather. Big skies, low light, a proper sea running. Some of the best photographs anybody takes here are taken in November, and the walk into Filey along the sand is better in a coat than in a heatwave.

The thing to plan around is not rain, it is daylight. Sunset is around half four by the middle of the month. Do the beach in the morning, the pub or the pool in the afternoon, and light the fire at four.

What do you do when it rains all day?

You need a cottage that works indoors, which is the honest test of a November let. Ours has a separate living room with a door and a log burner in it, which is rarer on The Bay than you would think. It means the fire and the football can be in one room and the jigsaw in another.

Beyond the cottage: the pool and leisure centre on site are free with the stay, Scarborough and Bridlington have indoor options within half an hour, and Whitby and York are both doable day trips. The Spirit of Yorkshire distillery at Hunmanby is a properly good wet-afternoon plan.

Is it cheaper?

Substantially. Across our own bookings, November runs at roughly half the nightly rate of August, and midweek is cheaper again. Short breaks of three and four nights are the norm rather than full weeks, which suits a long weekend with the dog.

Occupancy in November sits around 43% for us, which is another way of saying there is usually something free at short notice. If you can travel midweek, you will have both the beach and the pick of the dates.

Can dogs go on Filey beach in November?

Yes, all of it. The seasonal restriction on the central stretch of Filey beach runs from 1 May to 30 September only. From 1 October the entire bay is open to dogs, and stays open through the winter until the following May.

Is anything open on the Yorkshire coast in winter?

Is a November break cheaper than summer?

Roughly half the August nightly rate at our cottage, and less again midweek. Three and four-night breaks are usual rather than full weeks, and there is normally availability at short notice, which August never offers.
