When can dogs go on Filey beach?
Dogs can go on Filey beach all year round. The only exception is the central stretch in front of the town, which is closed to dogs from 1 May to 30 September. From 1 October the whole of Filey Bay is open again, and the ends of the bay never close at all.
If you are planning an autumn or winter break with a dog, that is the short answer. Below is the detail: exactly which bit is restricted, where you can walk instead in July, and what the beach is actually like once the season lifts.
In short: Filey’s dog restriction covers only the central beach between the Royal Parade sea wall and the Coble Landing slipway, from 1 May to 30 September. Breaching it carries a £100 fixed penalty. Hunmanby Gap, at the southern end, takes dogs every day of the year.
Which part of Filey beach is closed to dogs?
Only the middle. North Yorkshire Council’s Public Spaces Protection Order covers the beach between a line drawn out from the southernmost point of the Royal Parade sea wall and a line drawn from the slipway that separates the Coble Landing from the Promenade. That is the busy town stretch, roughly where the deckchairs and the donkey rides are.
Everything beyond those two lines stays open. Filey Bay runs about five miles from the Brigg in the north to Reighton in the south, so the restricted section is a small fraction of it.

When exactly does the restriction start and end?
1 May to 30 September. It applies every year, and 2026 is no different. That means 1 October is the day the whole bay reopens, and it stays open right through until the following May.
This is the bit most visitors do not know. People assume a seaside town means a summer-long dog ban everywhere, so they book elsewhere. In practice a dog can run the full five miles of Filey Bay for seven months of the year, including every week of the autumn and winter.
Where can you walk a dog in Filey in summer?
Hunmanby Gap, and it is the better beach anyway. The Gap sits at the southern end of the bay, about three miles from Filey town, and it is outside the restricted zone. Dogs are welcome there every day of the year with no seasonal closure.
It is a wide, flat, sandy beach backed by low cliffs, with a car park, public toilets and a small cafe at the top of the slipway. The Beach Cafe is dog-friendly and sits looking north up the bay towards Filey Brigg. Worth knowing before you set off: neither the cafe nor the car park takes cards, so bring cash.

Can you walk from Hunmanby Gap into Filey along the sand?
Yes, at low tide, and it is the walk our guests talk about most. It is roughly three miles of flat sand from the Gap to the Coble Landing, and it takes about an hour and a quarter at a dog’s pace.
Check the tide before you go. The bay is wide and shallow, so the sea goes a long way out and comes back a long way in, and you do not want to be caught against the cliffs on a rising tide. Between October and April you can do the whole thing with the dog off the lead.
What we notice, having watched the bookings for five years: nine out of ten of our November guests bring a dog. It is the single biggest month for dogs in our year, and it is no coincidence that it falls squarely inside the open season.
What about the rest of the Yorkshire coast?
The same 1 May to 30 September pattern applies to designated stretches at Scarborough, Whitby and Sandsend, all under the same North Yorkshire Council order. The principle is consistent: the busy central beaches close for the summer, the quieter ends stay open, and everything reopens on 1 October.
Cayton Bay, a few miles north towards Scarborough, is a popular year-round alternative and a favourite with surfers.

Fifteen to twenty minutes on foot, downhill on the way there. The path from The Bay down to Hunmanby Gap is surfaced most of the way, so a buggy manages it. It is uphill coming back, which is worth knowing with a wet dog.
Planning an autumn or winter break
