How far is Filey from Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester and Newcastle?

Filey is about an hour and a half from Leeds, an hour and fifty from Sheffield, two hours from Newcastle and two hours ten from Manchester. All four are comfortable half-day drives, and Sheffield has a direct train.

In short: Filey sits inside a two-hour drive of most of the north. Leeds is 68 miles, Sheffield 90, Newcastle 95 and Manchester 108. There is a station in Filey itself on the Hull to Scarborough line, and Sheffield runs a direct train in about two and a half hours.

How long does it take to drive to Filey?

Here are the four we get asked about most, measured to Filey itself. The Bay is about two miles further south, so add three or four minutes.

Those are clear-road times. On a Friday in August, or behind a caravan on the A64 past Malton, add half an hour and do not fight it. The A64 is the pinch point for anyone coming from the west or south.

Which route is best?

From Leeds and Manchester, the A64 through York and Malton, then on towards Scarborough and down. It is the obvious way and the busiest.

From Sheffield, most people run up the A1 and across, or take the M18 and M62 and come in through York. Both work. The A1 route is usually calmer in summer.

From Newcastle, the A19 south past Teesside, then across country through Thirsk and Malton. It is a pleasant drive and it avoids the worst of the A64.

A word on the last mile: The Bay is signposted off Moor Road between Filey and Hunmanby. Do not follow a satnav into the centre of Filey town and try to work outwards, because the seafront roads are narrow and, in season, full.

Can you get to Filey by train?

Yes, and better than most seaside towns. Filey has its own station on the Hull to Scarborough line, and Hunmanby has one too, which is the nearer of the two to The Bay.

From Sheffield there is a direct service, hourly, taking about 2 hours 32 minutes. That is the standout: no changes, straight through.

From Leeds, expect around 2 hours 5 minutes with a change. From Newcastle, about 2 hours 26 with changes at York and Seamer. From Manchester, about 3 hours 5 minutes, usually via Seamer.

Seamer is the junction that makes the coast work. If a route looks awkward, it is usually because it wants you to change there.

Do you need a car once you are here?

Not for the beach, and that is the point of staying where we do. The path down to Hunmanby Gap is walkable in fifteen to twenty minutes, and the resort has a shop, a pub, a cafe and the leisure centre on site.

You will want a car for the days out. Scarborough, Bridlington, Flamborough Head, Sewerby and Whitby are all drives rather than walks. There is a full list in our days out guide.

Where do most guests actually come from?

We went back through five years of guest reviews and mapped the home towns. The answer surprised us slightly: it is not York or Hull, it is the west. Stockport appears more than any other single town. After that: Sheffield, Leeds, Barnsley, Huddersfield, Manchester, and a cluster from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire including Chesterfield, Worksop and Mansfield.

Nearly all of it sits inside that two-hour ring. People who come here are people who can leave after work on a Friday and be walking on sand before dark in summer.
