Filey Golf Club: the one on the doorstep

Filey Golf Club is on West Avenue in the town, a short drive from The Bay. The club was founded in 1897 and moved to its present site two years later, with the links credited to James Braid. The main course is 18 holes, par 70, around 6,274 yards from the white tees, and there is a 9-hole academy course as well, which is useful if you have a beginner in the group or only want a quick round.

Ganton: the championship course inland

Ganton Golf Club sits in the village of Ganton just off the A64, about nine miles and a quarter of an hour from Filey. It is the serious one. Ganton has hosted the Ryder Cup in 1949, the Curtis Cup in 2000 and the Walker Cup in 2003, and it is ranked among the top 30 championship courses in Europe.

It is a heathland course rather than a links, which makes it an interesting contrast with everything else on this list. The club do not ask visitors for a handicap, but they do ask that you are a competent golfer, because it is a genuinely difficult championship course. The clifftop courses south: Flamborough and Bridlington

• Flamborough Head Golf Club is about nine miles from Filey Golf Club. Established in 1931, it is an 18-hole clifftop links shaped around the headland, with the North Sea in view for most of the round.

Both are an easy morning out from The Bay, and you can pair either with an afternoon at Sewerby or on Bridlington front if the rest of the party is not playing.

The clubhouse bar and restaurant at Bridlington Links is open to non-members, so it works as a lunch stop even for the half of the party that has not played. Green fees change with the season, so check the current rates before you travel.

Flamborough Head: prices and how to book

Martin Davis, the golf manager at Flamborough Head, sent these figures over in August 2026. Like the Bridlington rates below, they come from the club rather than from a directory. They will still move with the season, so treat them as a guide and confirm when you ring.

How to book

There is no online booking at Flamborough Head. Tee times are arranged by phone or by email, and the club asks that groups book with them directly rather than through a third party. Worth knowing before you go looking for them on an app.

Bridlington Links: prices, society days and how to book

Anna in the office at Bridlington Links sent these over, so unlike most golf pages this is not guesswork. Prices are their summer 2026 rates and will change with the season, so treat them as a guide and check before you travel.

• 18 holes: £32.50 midweek, £40 at the weekend. A full day ticket is £50 midweek and £60 at the weekend.
• Afternoon, 12.30 to 2.30: £27.50 midweek, £32.50 at the weekend.
• Twilight, from 2.30: £22.50 midweek, £27.50 at the weekend. Nine holes from £12.
• Under 16s play 18 holes at half price. Worth knowing if you are bringing a teenager who plays.
• Buggies are £40 for visitors, and a push trolley is £5.

Society and group days start at £38 a head, which includes 18 holes and a catering package. For a stag weekend, a family group or a few couples sharing the cottage, that is the number worth quoting.

They also give a discount to county card holders, and they have reciprocal arrangements with several clubs in the area, so it is worth asking if you are a member somewhere.

How to book

• Two players, playing within the week: book through the BRS or GolfNow app, which takes bookings up to seven days ahead.
• Larger groups, advance bookings or a package: email the club directly. Their phone lines are being upgraded and are unreliable at the moment, so email is the faster route.

One more thing worth knowing if not everyone in your party plays: the clubhouse bar and restaurant are open to non-members, and they are happy for you to call in and have a look round.

Scarborough: two more, north

• Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club dates back to 1909, with the present course laid out by James Braid in 1928. It opens on the cliff top, threads inland between trees and spinneys with the Moors in the distance, then returns to the cliff for the last three holes.
• Scarborough South Cliff Golf Club is on the south side of town and welcomes visitors, with the coastline in view for much of the round.

Driving ranges, and somewhere to take a beginner

If someone in the party has never held a club, or you just want an hour of practice rather than a full round, there are two ranges within easy reach. Both are cheaper and less committing than a tee time.

• Filey Golf Club has a six-bay range fitted with Trackman, which measures carry, ball speed, launch angle and how far off line you were. Open 6am to 10pm, seven days a week. Balls are £3 for 20, £5.50 for 40, £7 for 60 and £8.50 for 80.
• Bridlington Links has 19 floodlit bays, so you can practise after dark, and club hire is free, which makes it the easy option for a complete beginner.
